Is meekness a weakness?

2

:

Or could it be a kind of super-power?

3

:

Jesus said something about this in his

beatitudes, which some say provide a

4

:

blueprint for living the Christian life.

5

:

So let's join a conversation with

our Good News team Lynn Shematek,

6

:

Lauren Welch and Jon Shematek.

7

:

Jon: Our Beatitude for today is the

third one on the list, Blessed are

8

:

the meek, they shall inherit the earth.

9

:

I'm so eager to hear what you

two have to say about meek.

10

:

And what, what does meek mean to you?

11

:

Lauren Welch: When I hear the word

meek for most of my life, what I

12

:

thought was someone who was weak,

someone who more like a doormat

13

:

allowed people to run over them.

14

:

I didn't think of meek

as being anything good.

15

:

Oh, that's the first thing

that comes to mind for me.

16

:

Jon: Lynn, how about you when you hear

the word meek, is that what you think

17

:

of, or do you have something else?

18

:

Lynn: More meek and mild.

19

:

Someone that's just things

aren't bothering them.

20

:

They just let it go and don't say much.

21

:

I guess maybe a doormat.

22

:

Maybe something, someone that just

is there but not really present.

23

:

What about you?

24

:

......

Jon: my initial reaction sounds just like the two of you.

25

:

I think of of somebody that's

I think someone is meek.

26

:

I think that they're passive.

27

:

They're very they don't

want to be noticed.

28

:

They're fearful in a way.

29

:

And yeah.

30

:

Weak and passive.

31

:

That's what comes to mind.

32

:

So that can't be what Jesus meant.

33

:

Can it?

34

:

Lauren Welch: I don't think so.

35

:

I think Jesus was meek and he was

calling his disciples to, to be meek,

36

:

which is to, I believe, to be conscious

of their strengths, of their weaknesses,

37

:

and to know that they can with God's

help do what they're being called to do.

38

:

Jesus certainly lived his life

following his call knowing his

39

:

strength where he needed help.

40

:

He called 12 people and then 72 to

help with this mission because he

41

:

knew he couldn't do it all by himself.

42

:

He needed more people to to work with him.

43

:

And so I think it's in knowing and

knowing yourself, knowing your strength.

44

:

And it's being I think the word that

we use today that best describes what I

45

:

believe meek is humility, is not putting

your ego forth, but allowing the spirit

46

:

to speak through you and in everything

you do if you can do that, which is hard.

47

:

I don't think we do it all the time.

48

:

Jon: I think it is hard.

49

:

I think it's very hard.

50

:

What's that country western song?

51

:

It's hard to be humble When you look

like me because i'm so handsome.

52

:

Yeah all that

53

:

Lauren Welch: right,

54

:

Jon: so would you agree that?

55

:

Meek tends to have, for many people,

many of us, myself included, a

56

:

negative connotation, but maybe

humility is not quite so negative.

57

:

Lynn: Yeah, I think that we do

like the humility, humble, the

58

:

humble giant, the, person that is.

59

:

capable of, tearing you apart,

and he turns out to be the hero of

60

:

the story, and that he's so good.

61

:

So yeah, I think that humble or humility

is a better way to say than meek.

62

:

Jon: And I really like that kind

of ties in very much to what Lauren

63

:

said that I really was you said that

someone who is meek or humble is aware

64

:

of their strength, which is true.

65

:

And I think they are aware of the good

use they can put their strength to.

66

:

It's like the humble giant.

67

:

This is a, there's someone,

there's a sweetness there.

68

:

There's strength.

69

:

that could be destructive, physical

strength, but strength, there's

70

:

a more like an inner strength

that is, is more about not being

71

:

destructive, but being constructive.

72

:

Now, I, and I thought Lauren, it

was interesting when you're talking

73

:

about Jesus saying he, his meekness

was recognizing his strength.

74

:

And I also liked, cause I thought,

Oh, what you going to say about

75

:

Jesus recognizing his weakness?

76

:

You didn't say that you said he

recognized when he needed help, he

77

:

recognized that he needed others.

78

:

And maybe that's for us.

79

:

What meekness is recognizing.

80

:

Being humble enough to know what our

strength and power is and being humble

81

:

enough to know where we need help, where

we need God, where we need other people.

82

:

We can't do anything alone.

83

:

The three of us can't

do this podcast alone.

84

:

We need help.

85

:

We need God to guide us

through some of this.

86

:

And we need each other to

to offer advice and counsel.

87

:

And content.

88

:

Yeah.

89

:

Lynn: I think it's interesting in this,

is that they get to inherit the earth.

90

:

The meek shall inherit the earth.

91

:

Now, if you believe in the second

coming and all of this, Isn't

92

:

the earth going to be dissolving

or, earth is quite transitory.

93

:

Jon: Yeah.

94

:

So what what do you think that could mean

that they're going to inherit the earth?

95

:

That's great because we haven't looked

necessarily at the other half of these

96

:

Beatitudes all the time and to say,

for they shall inherit the earth.

97

:

What does that actually mean?

98

:

Is that something that sounds positive?

99

:

Yeah,

100

:

Lynn: what I imagine probably would sound

positive, let's say, to someone that has

101

:

not had a very good life on this earth.

102

:

Jon: That's a question that comes

out of this is what could that mean?

103

:

And certainly the literal earth.

104

:

I really wonder about, it's

less attractive today than ever.

105

:

So it's who wants to inherit this mess of

the climate change and the pollution and

106

:

all the wars and insurrections and floods

and turmoil and all the apocalyptic kind

107

:

of stuff that was in the Bible happening.

108

:

So it, it must mean something else, right?

109

:

Lauren Welch: Might it mean

that people who have humility?

110

:

can bring people together, can help

bring peace among among people who

111

:

are not at peace, bring harmony.

112

:

Jon: So inherit the earth, but a different

kind of earth than we have today.

113

:

Because if let's say everyone were meek,

what a different world that would be,

114

:

and it would be a world worth inheriting.

115

:

Maybe that's what it means.

116

:

And Lauren, you mentioned some episodes

in Jesus life where he was meek.

117

:

And what, are there others

that come to mind for anybody?

118

:

Lauren Welch: The one that stands out

for me with Jesus is him before Pilate.

119

:

Jesus knowing what was going to happen.

120

:

He didn't debate Pilate.

121

:

He stood silent before him.

122

:

He allowed Pilate to tell him who he was,

and he said, yeah you said it, not me.

123

:

So he knew who he was, he knew

who he was in God, and that's the

124

:

only thing that was important.

125

:

And what Pilate or the other people

were going to do and say he, he

126

:

left the consequences of that.

127

:

In God's hands, or in the

people's hands that we're going

128

:

to do it, but in God's hands

129

:

Jon: yeah.

130

:

And , in thinking about it when you

described and brought back to mind

131

:

Jesus standing before Pilate I thought

what was exquisitely true of him?

132

:

I think he was.

133

:

The example of someone who is self aware.

134

:

I think that this what

meekness means, it could mean.

135

:

Someone who is meek is

extremely self aware.

136

:

They are aware of their strengths.

137

:

They are aware of the areas in their lives

where they need some help or improvement.

138

:

And so maybe if we were rewriting this

Beatitude today, we'd say, Blessed

139

:

are the self aware, for they know

their strengths and use it well.

140

:

They know their weaknesses and

ask for help when necessary.

141

:

I like thinking of it that way.

142

:

It gives a whole different

dimension to meek.

143

:

It's so much more it's not just

wordsmithing it to make it sound positive.

144

:

That must have been, something like

that must have been Jesus intent.

145

:

. Lauren Welch: Think it's really

difficult to become, Self aware or

146

:

conscious of our motives of our of what

is going on inside of us all the time.

147

:

I think it's very difficult to become

self aware to to look at ourselves

148

:

and see ourselves as we are, both our

true selves and our shadow selves.

149

:

Lynn: And Lauren, what do

you mean by a shadow selF?

150

:

Lauren Welch: the false self the

self that we don't wanna look at, the

151

:

things that I'm ashamed of those that's

the, for me, that's the shadow side.

152

:

Lynn: I also think that the thing

that Jesus was trying to do with these

153

:

Beatitudes is to, not only to give

them a blueprint of how to become

154

:

Christians and how to live their

lives, but also that, that if you

155

:

do this, it gives you great comfort.

156

:

The meek will inherit land.

157

:

They'll become important, I think.

158

:

And so it's in each of the ones

it has been something that, that

159

:

Gives you great comfort too.

160

:

That's one of the things that I think

that for me has been so difficult is with

161

:

so many times you say, Oh, Jesus says,

pick up your, you don't pick up your

162

:

cross and carry it or things like that.

163

:

And it I don't want to do that.

164

:

I want to have a nice, comfortable life.

165

:

But these are different.

166

:

They give you comfort.

167

:

Each thing gives you comfort.

168

:

And you realize, if you do,

if you are doing good things,

169

:

it does give you comfort.

170

:

If you are being meek and you

are being these other attributes,

171

:

it does give you comfort.

172

:

So it's in this life, and you don't

have to wait for the next life.

173

:

I

174

:

Jon: What I'd like to do is ask our

viewers and listeners to consider

175

:

what does meekness mean to you?

176

:

What does it mean to be meek?

177

:

Does it mean Something negative, or can

it mean something like self awareness?

178

:

And also, secondly, to think of

examples either in the Bible, in

179

:

Jesus life, or other other persons

in the Bible, or in your own life in

180

:

particular, of someone you know, or

you yourself, if you've had moments

181

:

of humility, what that has been like.

182

:

. So that wraps up the beatitude

about being meek and We're so

183

:

grateful that you're with us today.

184

:

Thanks very much for being here

185

:

Lynn: Thank you, everyone.

186

:

Take care.

187

:

Lauren Welch: Blessings and

peace until we meet again.
